About: The solar plexus is the third of our chakras found in our physical body. This chakra governs our personal power, expression of our will power, self esteem, intellectual abilities and determination. It governs our sense of self. This is our power centre. This chakra is all about our ego identity, our relationship with our inner self, the maturation of our ego, our ambition and our intellect. This is all about taking responsibility and control for one’s life, self discipline, self assurance, confidence, making decisions, setting the direction of your life and making our own judgements.
Physically, this chakra is connected to our middle section of our spine, spleen and upper abdomen. It also influences our gallbladder and small intestines.
Balanced Solar Plexus Chakra: When your solar plexus is balanced, you are assertive and able to exert your will in an effortless manner. In addition, you are more intuitive, comfortable in your own skin, have inner peace, are confident without being arrogant, have a calm demeanour and are patient and flexible.
Blocked solar plexus chakra: When our Solar Plexus is blocked it makes you oversensitive to critical comments. In addition, your will power is compromised and you feel helpless and not responsible over things going on in your life. You have lower self esteem, self doubt, a victim mentality. You feel others are better than you. On the opposite end, when your solar plexus is overactive – you are vain, feel entitled, have a big ego, are controlling, overbearing, power hungry, excessively ambitious and have ego maniac tendencies. I always think of Ye when I think of an overactive solar plexus!
On a physical level, you will experience low metabolisim, poor digestion, fatigue, liver problems, ulcers, digestive system, stomach issues, nervous system, respiratory system and lower back problems and weight problems. You feel sluggish, lifeless, passive and energetically blocked.
Emotionally, you will experience low self esteem, low levels of confidence, no sense of purpose, indecision, anger, low motivation, addicted, depressed, apathy, insecure and anxious You wont feel secure about your future and feel like you don’t have enough in your life. You also struggle setting boundaries with other people and tend to form co-dependent relationships with others.
Balancing your Solar Plexus Chakra
Solar Plexus Chakra affirmation: I do
Mantra: Ram (chant this during meditation)
Essential Oils: Chamomile, lemon, bergamot, cedarwood, rosemary, black pepper, cinnamon, grapefruit, mandarin, jupiter, coriander, cypress, geranium, clove and ginger. Use only pure, non-diluted oils. These pure oils can be consumed, diffused into the air to be inhaled, can be put on the body or used in a bath – but check that the oil you are about to use is safe to use with water first.Food: The colours of the chakras are linked to the foods that they need so any foods that are orange in colour will help balance your solar plexus chakra. These include bananas, yellow peppers, lemons, corn, squash, chick peas, pumpkin, pineapple, mangoes, peaches, yellow pears, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger. In addition, legumes such as lentils, chickpeas and beans are great for this chakra. Also spelt, brown rice and oats help balance this chakra.
Crystals: Many crystals emanate vibrations that parallel the chakras and each chakra has a corresponding crystal companion. For the solar plexus chakra any yellow crystals are ideal. These include yellow calcite, pyrite, golden citrine, amber, yellow tourmaline, sunstone, yellow jasper, yellow jade, yellow topaz and golden tiger’s eye. You can carry them around with you, have them around the house, put them next to your bed, wear them, put them under your pillow, medidate with them around you or whilst holding them.
Your surroundings: Sun, sun and more sun! Get out and sunbake!
Exercises: Hot Yoga. Taking walks in the sun. Put on some music and dance baby! Warrior Pose (Virabhadrasana 1 and 2) and the plank pose are good for opening up the solar plexus. Hold these poses every morning for a few minutes. Other helpful asanas are Boat Pose (Navasana), which strengthens the core, Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar), Firefly (Tittibhasana) and Mountain (Tadasana).
Emotionally: To heal this chakra, we have to adopt tools to stop playing the victim and start taking responsibility for our actions and our lives. We have to get to a place where we are centred, not easily triggered and are able to control your emotions. Its also important to learn to stand up for ourselves and to say no if it feels right to. In addition, getting to know ourselves, our beliefs and who we are – away from what we have been taught and told to believe – is very healing for this chakra. Following our dreams, personal desires and goals also helps to heal this chakra. Taking risks, trying new things and exploring those areas in our lives we have the most resistant to helps to heal this chakra. Learn to listen to your intuition. First practice by following your gut instinct when making small decisions e.g. what to eat, which way to go and eventually use your intuition for even bigger decisions.Healing affirmations: I am confident in all that I do. Meditation: Practice inner fire meditation. It is a great exercise for cleansing and purification of your entire body and mind. This meditation can help you generate inner fire that rushes up the central channel and removes any blockages in the chakras, including the solar plexus chakra. Visualise a light golden flame brurning in your navel/stomach area during meditation. Another meditation is to visualise a brilliant yellow sunflower, daffodil or dandelion over your solar plexus chakra during your meditation. You an do so throughout the day when needed.
Remember, balancing your chakras requires ongoing maintenance so repeat all the above as much as you need and for as long as you need.
