Names(s): Sacral Chakra, Svadhisthana
Location: Lower abdomen, below the belly button, pelvic area
About: The sacral chakra is the second of all our chakras found in our physical body. This chakra is the seat of our sexuality, emotions and creativity. This chakra governs our libido, relationships, pleasure, sensations, how we relate to others, our feelings and our sensuality. Physically, this chakra is connected to our reproductive organs, bladder, uterus, spleen, large uterus. Emotionally it governs our feelings, our ability to relate to others and our creativity.
Balanced Sacral Chakra: When our sacral chakra is balanced, we are comfortable in our sexuality and recognize it as one of our most powerful creative energies. We create healthy sexual experiences with others that honor us and are able to enjoy pleasure in many different ways in our lives. We are also able to communicate better in relationships about our needs and have better control over our emotions. Physically, we feel healthy, attractive, sensual and have a healthy libido. We also have healthy levels of intimacy, an ability to let go and enjoy life. We are creative, emotional stable and feel joyous most of the time.
Blocked Sacral chakra: When our Sacral Chakra is blocked, we experience difficulty allowing ourselves to become emotionally and sexually intimate. We have negative views of sex and may believe that we have to be sexy or have sex in order to be loved. We move from one relationship to the next, constantly and unconsciously, looking for love outside of ourself. We also experience low libido. In addition, when this chakra is blocked, we may also struggle with our self-image. We feel stuck in a particular mood or feeling and do not generally get pleasure or motivation from what we are doing. In addition, we do not have a sense of purpose.
Physically, when our sacral chakra is blocked, we will experience intense menstrual pain, urinary pain, lower back pain, kidney and gallbladder issues. We also experience issues with our reproductive glands, uterus, ovaries, spleen and large intestine. In addition, we will tend to engage in excessive indulging, insatiable desires and addictive behaviours.
Emotionally, we experience feelings of guilt, co-dependency, dependency, apathy, detachment, feeling overly sensitive, prone to emotional outbursts, overeating and manipulative behaviour. Excessive emotional attachment to people or objects, excessive neediness in relationships and experiencing creative blocks are also triggered by a blocked sacral chakra.
Balancing your Sacral Chakra
Sacral Chakra affirmation: I feel
Mantra: Vam (chant this during meditation)
Essential Oils: Ylang ylang, Neroli, Fennel, Patchouli, Clary sage, Orange, Rosewood, Bergamot, Jasmine and Sandalwood. Use only pure, non-diluted oils. These pure oils can be consumed, diffused into the air to be inhaled, can be put on the body or bath water – but check that the oil you are about to use is safe to use with water first.
Food: The colours of the chakras are linked to the foods that they need so any foods that are orange in colour will help balance your sacral chakra. These include cantaloupe, oranges, apricot, mango, nectarines, papaya, peaches, butternut squash, pumpkin, carrots, sweet potato, orange peppers. Other foods for the sacral chakra include cinnamon, coconuts, fish, seeds, and drinking plenty of water.
Crystals: Many crystals emanate vibrations that parallel the chakras and each chakra has a corresponding crystal companion. For the sacral chakra any orange crystals are ideal. These include amber, tiger eye, citrine, hermatite and carnelian. You can carry them around with you, have them around the house, put them next to your bed, wear them, put them under your pillow, medidate with them around you or whilst holding them.
Your surroundings: Since the sacral chakra’s element is water, getting outside and relaxing near open water can help balance your second chakra. Lakes, rivers, streams or the ocean are all useful. If possible, wade in or dangle your feet in the water to help the energy flow. Taking a bath or a shower can also contribute to balancing your chakra while providing the relaxation needed to keep your emotions flowing. Add some of the essential oils listed above.
Exercises: Hip opening poses such as yoga poses like Open Eagle pose (Upavistha Konasana) or Bound Angle pose (Baddha Konasana). Other yoga poses for sacral chakra include Child’s pose (Balasana), Dancer’s pose (Natarajasana), Revolved/Twisted triangle pose (Trikonasana), Cow face (Gomukhasana) One-Legged King Pigeon (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana) Chair pose Utkatasana) and Full Boat pose (Paripurna Navasana). In addition, sun salutations are healing for the sacral chakra. In essence, one has to go through all 12 poses to regain balance and ensure they are centred.
Emotionally: Its important to heal toxic relationships such as imbalanced family dynamics, power plays at work and imbalanced intimate relationships. Its also important to communicate our feelings and emotions in our relationships. When emotions are not fully expressed or expressed indirectly, such as in passive aggressive behaviours, the second chakra comes out of balance. In addition, learning to let go of the past, toxic people, unhealthy relationships and memories is an important part of healing our sacral chakra. The energy of your sacral chakra can be shut down or blocked as a result of sexual repression. Healing this chakra is important to restore a healthy image of sexuality and pleasure. Working on trust around sex and sensuality is helpful.
Healing affirmations: I am healing. I am alive and I am connected. I am aware. I embrace pleasure and abundance. I love and enjoy my body. I enjoy life fully. I have healthy boundaries. I enjoy my sexuality fully. I am passionate. I feel pleasure and abundance with every breath I take. I allow myself to experience pleasure. My sexuality is sacred. I nourish my body with healthy food and clean water. I take good care of my physical body. I know how to take care of my needs. I value and respect my body. I am open to touch and closeness. Emotions are the language of my soul. I am at peace.
Meditation: A simple sacral chakra healing meditation consists in envisioning an orange lotus or orange crescent moon in the area of the second chakra in the pelvis area. Hold that image in your mind for a few minutes while breathing deeply in and out.
Alternatively, pick one of the crystals above, place the crystal on your belly 2 to 3 inches below the navel. Close your eyes and just meditate quietly for 10 to 15 minutes and let the crystal do its thing.
Remember, balancing your chakras requires ongoing maintenance so repeat all the above as much as you need and for as long as you need.
